The physiological sigh
Two quick inhales, one long exhale — the reset your body already performs spontaneously. Done deliberately, it is one of the fastest ways to calm down.
Typical cadence
- Inhale ~0.7s to midway, quick top-up ~0.5s to full, then long exhale ~3s
- Repeat gently for 1–2 minutes as needed; avoid hyperventilation
How it works
The physiological sigh consists of two rapid inhales (the second topping up lung inflation) followed by a prolonged exhale. In lab settings, sighs reinflate collapsed alveoli and can rapidly reduce CO₂. Emerging human studies suggest that brief daily breathwork with cyclic sighing can improve mood and reduce resting respiratory rate versus mindfulness. Animal work has identified brainstem circuits that generate spontaneous sighs.

How to practice
